Oral Surgery Services in Hood River, OR

Oral surgery is a branch of dentistry that involves the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. There are several oral surgery procedures that can be performed in a general dental office. It is important to note that, in some cases, the patient may be referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who is a specialist in oral surgery, if the procedure is more complex or if the patient has certain medical conditions.

Tooth Extraction

One of the most common procedures is tooth extraction. Tooth extractions may be necessary for a variety of reasons, such as severe tooth decay, infection, or overcrowding. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, and the dentist will use special instruments to loosen the tooth before removing it.

Another common procedure is the removal of impacted wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth are those that do not fully emerge from the gums, and they can cause pain, swelling, and infection. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation and the dentist will make an incision in the gums to remove the tooth.

What They’re Saying

“Let me start by saying that going to the dentist is my greatest fear. Always has been since I was a child. Both of my experiences with Hood River Dental, both for extractions, have been superb. The dentists and dental assistants that I've had have been excellent. I think they may have helped me overcome my fear of going to the dentist!”

Dental Implants

Dental implant surgery is a procedure in which a metal post is inserted into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth. This procedure is regularly performed at Hood River Dental and typically requires local anesthesia or IV sedation. After the implant is inserted, the patient will need to wait several months for the implant to fuse with the jawbone before the final restorative crown can be attached. You can read more about this procedure on our dental implants page.

Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Disorders

These issues, commonly called “TMJ,” are a group of conditions that can cause discomfort and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. Our dentists at Hood River Dental can assess your condition and often recommend a retainer or nightguard to be worn, to help alleviate symptoms. These clear comfortable retainers can be made through our office. More complex cases may be referred to an Oral Surgery office for consultation. You can read more on our TMJ/TMD page.
